Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence at Urgench State University named after Abu Rayhan Beruni

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are developing very rapidly. Urgench State University supports the safe, responsible and effective use of these technologies by students and staff, as they play an important role in future educational and professional activities.

Ethical Use

Artificial intelligence tools must be used at the university in accordance with the principles of academic integrity, scientific rigor and responsibility established for students.

Students must:

  • use artificial intelligence honestly, conscientiously and transparently;
  • approach AI-generated results critically;
  • independently verify their accuracy and reliability.

These guidelines contain practical recommendations on the proper use of AI tools during the learning process at Urgench State University.

Students must always follow the instructions given by their teachers, academic supervisors, and the faculty or department.

Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Assessment Process

Before each test, quiz or exam, the university notifies in writing whether the use of artificial intelligence is permitted or not.

The student is personally responsible for the:

  • accuracy;
  • originality;
  • quality of the work submitted for assessment.

If the use of artificial intelligence is permitted in a particular type of assessment, the student must submit an official declaration to this effect in the established form.

The use of AI in assessment work without written permission is, according to university rules, regarded as:

  • academic dishonesty;
  • plagiarism.

In such cases, the following penalties may be applied:

  • failing the relevant assessment;
  • in serious cases, expulsion from the university.

The use of AI is considered legitimate only when it has been permitted in advance and in writing by the faculty or department for a specific assessment.

Even if the use of AI was permitted in previous assignments, this does not mean automatic permission for subsequent assessments.

Cases of unauthorized use of AI are considered on the basis of the university's rules on student discipline.

Use of AI in Scientific Research

All scientific research by faculty members, doctoral students and students must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the university's "Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research".

AI is considered to have been used substantively in the following cases:

  • analysis of data, images and audio recordings;
  • preparation of a literature review;
  • translation work;
  • identifying the research problem;
  • formulating research objectives and hypotheses;
  • developing new ideas;
  • writing program code;
  • generating synthetic data;
  • transcribing interviews and meetings;
  • preparing documents.

In such cases, the use of AI must always be indicated.

The following cases are usually not considered "substantive use":

  • language editing;
  • correcting document formatting;
  • improving the style of the text;
  • assisting persons with disabilities.

The use of AI in scientific research is also monitored on the basis of the university's academic integrity rules.

Health and Psychological Well-being

AI cannot replace human communication or psychological support. It:

  • cannot fully understand emotional states;
  • is not intended to provide medical advice;
  • may give incorrect or dangerous advice.

In situations of psychological crisis or severe conditions, AI chatbots may sometimes reinforce negative thoughts.

Therefore, the university recommends that students use psychological services, counseling centers and other support services.

Use of AI in the Educational Process

University education is aimed at developing in students the skills of:

  • independent thinking;
  • drawing evidence-based conclusions;
  • academic writing;
  • critical analysis.

AI does not replace these skills.

Students may use university-supported AI tools such as ChatGPT Edu, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and NotebookLM for the purposes of:

  • preparing for study;
  • understanding topics;
  • consolidating knowledge.

However, any AI result must be verified through reliable sources.

Academic Writing and Presentation Skills

AI tools can be useful for:

  • editing academic text;
  • providing initial feedback;
  • improving style;
  • preparing presentations.

However, they do not replace independent reading and academic writing skills.

With the help of AI, it is possible to obtain summaries of articles, but this does not replace the in-depth study of scientific literature.

Supporting the Learning Process

AI can be used as an auxiliary tool in the educational process.

However, the answers provided by AI must be discussed with teachers and verified on the basis of reliable sources.

AI in Professional Activities

In the modern labor market, the use of AI tools is considered an important skill.

However, each employer's attitude towards the use of AI may differ.

Therefore, during the job search process, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the employer's requirements.

Recommendations for the Effective Use of AI Tools

Urgench State University provides students with the following corporate AI platforms:

  • ChatGPT Edu – complex analysis, text generation and summarizing information.
  • Microsoft Copilot – working with internet data and preparing documents.
  • Google Gemini – an AI assistant integrated with Google Workspace.
  • NotebookLM – analyzing and summarizing lecture texts and scientific sources.

Users must always keep in mind that:

  • the same query may produce different results;
  • AI sometimes uses outdated or incorrect information;
  • AI results may be biased towards certain cultural or geographical approaches;
  • AI does not replace independent thinking;
  • uploading confidential, official or unpublished data to external AI platforms not approved by the university is strictly prohibited.

Technical Support

For problems related to ChatGPT Edu, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and NotebookLM, it is recommended to first contact the official support services of these platforms, and if necessary, contact the university's IT service.
